To do nothing is sometimes a good remedy. ~Hippocrates

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Today has been a do nothing day.  Monday is “supposed” to be my day off, along with Thursday so why do I always feel guilty when I do nothing once in a while.

What a busy busy month this has been.  I had surgery this month along with back to back to back bookings for Younique Country Retreat.  We had lots of teachers booked in during the week of March break that kept us hopping.  So after not having a Monday off in a long time I took the time today to regroup – but still feel guilty.

Why is it we have to feel like we need to be doing something every minute of every day?  Is it just me?  Is it part of being a small business owner, wife, mother or just being a woman?   As much as I do in a day I always wonder how I can do more and can’t help comparing myself to others and how much they accomplish in a day.  I have thought about reducing the amount of sleep I get to try to get in more hours of  “workable” time in a day but with going non stop all day I do find that I need the 8 hours of sleep a night.

We are also trying to get ready for the upcoming Scrapfest event in April at the Kitchener Aud and like last year I have a number of things that have to be ready as we sponsor the event with freebies from Younique.  We are also trying to design our booth for the event and that in itself can be stressful but it’s a fun kind of stress (I know, I’m crazy).  It’s exciting to plan everything out and see how your booth comes together and how others will view the booth when they see it.  So this is where my focus is for the next couple of weeks.

We also have Easter around the corner and my family will be coming for Easter dinner.  During that time we will be going over the details for the next big crop in November.  Yes we have a theme and no we aren’t sharing it with you – yet.  There will be a contest in April that will give you (if you are signed up for the event) a chance to win a prize by guessing what our theme is.  We are approaching half way sold out so sign up now and you can win prizes for contests we will have over the next couple of months.  The event is on Saturday November 10th 2012.  Hope you can join us

We have so much new paper in the store you must come out to see it all.  Bo Bunny, Authentique, My Minds Eye, Kaisercraft, Basic Grey and so much more.

Thanks to Christine for sharing these layouts that she did using On The Go by Bo Bunny and the new Authentique line.

I love this paper.  It actually is not just geared for boys, it’s a fun line that has some great color for summer layouts as well.

What a great job Christine did with this paper.  I love the layering she did.   I can’t wait to play with the paper myself.

BTW – stay tuned for details on the upcoming Suzanne J Dean event in November

Oh Mexico. I miss you so.

After the last 2 weeks I have had I am ready for Mexico but we are still awhile away until we go back.   We aren’t flying out  until July this year which seems like it is so far away but I know it will be here sooner than we know.

Mr. Clean has a birthday today and although some days we chuckle that we are both falling apart I’m glad to be falling apart with him.  He is my best friend and so I made his favorite cake for dessert tonight.  Carrot cake with a buttermilk glaze and topped off with a Cream cheese frosting.

And back to Mexico…..

Ribbons and Dress form – good combination

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

I am on the mend and trying to catch up for the last 2 weeks.  March break might be quiet for you but it is super busy here at Younique.  While all the kids are off on March break our teachers like to enjoy the time off as well and so they visit us here.  We are so happy to have them and the complete week is booked with teachers coming and going.  Next week will seem so quiet after having such a busy week this week but it will be a week to work on the dreaded paperwork.

I have to share with you this great dress form I got at Home Outfitters a couple of weeks ago.

I though it was perfect….perfect to hang my ribbons on.  We have the ribbons in the store in a basket and you just have to rummage through it to find the perfect one.  This will allow me to have them hanging and make it much easier to view them to find just the right one for your scrapbooking page.  I have had it for 2 weeks trying to figure out just how to complete the project.  And so I thought I better just jump in and get it done.  Here are some photos in it’s various stages of completion.

and now almost completed and ready for the store

It really looks kinda neat but it’s hard to tell from the photo.  It’s definately a conversation piece and has caught the eyes of everyone that has come into the studio.  What do you think?

I’m back

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Wow it seems like years since I have posted something here on the blog.

The last 2 weeks have been a write off for me.  I had my surgery last Monday and then of course in typical Heather form I had a few minor complications but nothing serious.  By the time I got home Monday I was exhausted.  Tuesday back to the hospital and I didn’t think they were going to let me out, but they did.  By Wednesday I was feeling somewhat better but still tired.  Thursday I was trying to get some things “picked up” around the house but both Mr. Clean and his side kick Jeff followed me everywhere I went in the house making sure I wasn’t working on anything.

We had a full group of 10 in on the weekend and that really tired me out and may have been alittle too much too soon but it was still a great weekend and I know the ladies were happy that their weekend at Younique wasn’t cancelled.

This week now is “catch up” for the last week and I have to say that maybe being knocked out helped my creativity flow because I’m on a roll and full of ideas.  Now to implement them.  This week I stepped on the scale too – I was hoping that old gall bladder was a 50 pounder but it wasn’t – sucks to be me.

I did get a chance to “work” on some layouts and cards.  I’m really liking the Little Black Dress by Basic Grey.  It has been one of my favorites.  It’s right up there with Pyrus and Origin, which I love love love.  We are having a little contest on the Younique facebook group and if you haven’t joined us yet, please do as we having been having a number of contests there.

Here is a layout I just did of my mom and dad – very very young.  I used the Little Black Dress by Basic Grey and also the Two Scoops by Bazzill.  Two Scoops is a sandable paper and it’s really quite nice to work with.  I also used by Sew Stamper in the backgroud.  I didn’t want to use it as long stitches but rather I wanted to create a look of just random lines to make the background look worn out.

I think they were 16 and 17 here. They were married almost 40 years when my dad passed away at 56.  I know my mom still misses him….and so do I.

Time….what time?

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

They say if you want to have time for yourself you should schedule it in.  So by the time I finish scheduling in updating the blog, the website, and the online store.  Then there is receiving new product, pricing new product coming in, prepare for the weekend retreats, do the laundry, the cleaning, the shoppping and so on (I know you can all relate to it) I figure I could schedule some in in somewhere between 3 and 4 in the morning.

Where does time go?  Somedays I wish I could stop time and just breath and relax but then that wouldn’t be accomplishing anything would it.  Mr. Clean is not happy with me because I don’t take anytime for myself.  I am supposed to be “off” on Mondays and Thursdays but that doesn’t seem to happen.  So this Monday I will be taking time off, all to myself.  I’m going to have a nice restful sleep, maybe the best sleep I have had in a long time because on Monday I’ll be having surgery.  Bad isn’t it – I need to go to the hospital to actually rest.

So I thought I should get this post in tonight because I might not be around for most of next week.  I’ll have to hide my computer from Mr. Clean as I lay in bed resting up after the surgery.  I told my surgeon he had to operate on a Monday because I needed to be raring to go by Friday, after all we have 12 people arriving for a full day on Friday and then 10 for the weekend retreat.

Here are some photos of layouts using some of the new paper we just brought in.

Here is a layout using Authentique and My Minds Eye, Follow your heart.   I have to thank Tara for sharing her beautiful layouts with us.

I hope all of you in Ontario have had a wonderful Family Day today.  I was able to enjoy our family day yesterday with my mother, sisters, brother in laws and best of all my Mr. Clean and my son Jeff.  We are not a big family, in fact Jeff is the only grandchild so I really appreciate the time we have together when we can get together.  It’s such a special time for us as we lost alot of years where we did not keep in touch – almost 10 years and those are lost and can never get them back.  If I could give all of you some advise it is sometimes we have to take the leap to regain your relationship with your famil when something bitter comes between you.

I also found some of my family that we have lost touch with (cousins, aunt and uncle) and we are going to make an effort to get together.  It’s great to have facebook and be able to find family members don’t you think?

Here is one of the cards that I created.  I had gifts for everyone on Sunday to thank them for helping me with our big crop in January.

Here is the one I created for Barry

I haven’t played nearly enough with the Magnolia stamps and as we are about to bring in more of these into the store I thought it was fine time to play with them.  I used Basic Grey paper for my background on this card.

I’m going to keep this one short.  Just finished a newsletter, added some items into the Younique store and updated the blog.  I feel like I have had a successful day today.

What did you do for Family Day?

It’s all fun and games till someone gets hurt

Happy Valentines Day everyone.

From the posts I have seen on facebook today it appears I’m not the only one that is alone on Valentines Day.  I should have held a special crop tonight with lots of chocolate and ice cream and….more chocolate LOL.  Definately something to think about for next year.

So I went to the mall and picked up some photos I had printed at Blacks.  If you have not seen the 6 x 8 size of photos that they print you have to get your hands on some.  If you are like me and tend to be a one photo per page scrapbooker then this size is for you.  I love them.  AND to top it off if you buy a prepaid card to order your prints you get 300 prints for the price of 200 which works out to 17 cents each which is so so cheap.

I’m hoping to get some layouts done tomorrow.  I did do up 3 cards today but I can’t post any of them until next week because there are some “eyes” out there that read my blog and so I can’t let them see the cards.

I’m going through some photos on my computer and came across some food photos that Mr. Clean and Jeff took after Jeff finished prepping a dinner for our guests.

So I first come across the beautiful photo of Jeff’s chocolate mousse cake with Nilla wafers.  Yummy and so pretty.  And then……

I’m thinking the boy has too much time on his hands between meals LOL.  I’m so happy he enjoys his job and can have fun at it too.  How can he NOT have fun – we have the best guests here at Younique that make our job oh so easy.

In case you aren’t aware of it we have opened up registration for our next large crop that will be held on Saturday November 10th.  You can sign up through the www.youniqueshop.com
